Test phase summer 2019

Teleconsultation proved its effectiveness in France, where it has been shown that the patient's needs can be handled comprehensively through a video chat in 7 out of 10 cases . Two out of ten cases lead to a referral to a physical doctor's practice, because the teleconsultation is inconclusive. And Belgium? It seems that 64% of Belgians are open to communication with their doctor online. This interest led to testing the use of teleconsultation. And this showed, as expected, that teleconsultation users included parents using the service to obtain advice about their children's health.  The test phase, the positive figures from France, and the local demand for Teleconsultation made it clear that this had to be introduced to the Belgian market. Thanks to the strong partnership between AXA Belgium and AXA Partners, it became possible to launch Teleconsultation in October 2019.

Teleconsultation on the health market

The launch of Teleconsultation for all persons insured for hospitalization through AXA Belgium is a major step in the digitization of healthcare. This group of insured includes a total of 500,000 Belgians who have the option to use Teleconsultation when they cannot reach their own doctor. The company wants to use this option to facilitate ease of access to healthcare for their customers. Teleconsultation can be helpful when a person has any small practical questions regarding a treatment, and their regular GP is difficult to contact or unavailable.

Watch the video below to see why we and our business partners AXA Belgium are 100% behind teleconsultation and encourage its use.

How does a teleconsultation actually work?

A consultation within 30 minutes with a recognized doctor and an optimal user experience is achieved  through a few simple steps:

  • When calling in for a consultation, a nurse will run through a few questions with the patient. On this basis, he or she can prepare the consultation.
  • Then, at a time of his or her choice, the patient uses a unique access code to access a virtual waiting room, and the user can chat with the doctor.
  • Once the consultation has started in the secure environment, the doctor can make a diagnosis, give advice or refer the patient to a specialist if necessary.
  • Afterwards, the report is added to the patient's medical file.
